Sydney Alternative Housing Competition
16/02/2019

The proposal re-frames the way we view Sydney’s suburban streetscapes. It predicts the inevitable reduction in car-usage and ownership, while simultaneously increasing opportunities for affordable infill housing in strategic locations.

The proposal is suited to Sydney’s suburban context. Ideal sites are located within a close radius from the city, in suburbs that are mainly free from heritage and character planning overlays.

The proposal advocates for utilising wasted space on suburban streets that are over 10 metres wide. Many of these street types exist throughout Sydney, often in suburbs with well-connected public transport.

Suburban garages provide opportunity to densify Sydney’s suburbs, while still respecting their suburban and street character. Garages which have a streetside entry can be easily converted to operate as separate dwellings. The process for the garage conversion would be shared between the homeowner
and a housing association. Home owners would lease their garage to the association and receive a percentage of rent. Housing associations would be responsible for managing properties and tenants.
